- Book online through the appointment system linked from NetherlandsWorldwide. A passport and an ID card need separate appointments.
- Everyone applies in person, including applicants under 18.
- Bring the application form completed online, printed and signed; all Dutch and foreign passports and ID cards, including expired ones; and proof of legal residence in Vietnam (a valid visa or residence card, or a Vietnamese passport or ID for dual nationals).
- Vietnamese birth or marriage certificates need an apostille and a translation into Dutch, English, German or French.

Passports for children
- The child must always attend.
- Under 12: a parent applies. A parent who cannot attend signs a consent form and adds a dated, signed copy of their passport or ID.
- From 12: the child may apply for an ID card alone; a passport needs both parents' consent. From 18 no consent is needed.
- The birth must be registered first. Children cannot be added to a parent's passport.

Processing time and collection
- No fixed processing time is given. Contact NetherlandsWorldwide if you have not received an email after 8 weeks. November to March is usually quieter.
- After the email, collect the passport in person within 3 months; after that it is destroyed. It cannot be sent to you in Vietnam.
- Hand in your old passport when you collect the new one. Tell staff if it contains a Vietnamese visa or residence card you still need.

Lost passport in Vietnam
- Report the loss to the local police and ask for written proof.
- Travelling within 2 weeks: email han-ca@minbuza.nl (Hanoi) or hcm-ca@minbuza.nl (Ho Chi Minh City) for an emergency travel document, with the signed application form, the C2 form, proof of travel, details of the lost document and 2 photos.
- A laissez-passer usually takes 3 working days, a new passport about 10 working days.
- If the lost passport held a Vietnamese visa, apply for a new one at the Vietnamese Immigration Department before you fly (up to 5 working days).

Renew on time to keep Dutch nationality
Dual nationals who live outside the EU for 13 consecutive years lose Dutch nationality unless they get a new passport, ID card or nationality certificate within those 13 years. For children the period starts at 18. Apply at least 3 months before the deadline.
